Most other family language revolves around phrases and proverbs, often taken from comedy albums, some of them dating back to the 1920’s. A huge number—more than I ever realized—seem to have come from a series of minstrel show albums called “Two Black Crows.” Recently (thanks to the internet, where old ’78s are just a click away) I had the uncomfortable experience of hearing these undeniably witty remarks (and the origin of many family sayings) in this extremely distasteful setting. My family is white and at least semi-Brahmin, and our use of these phrases over the years has been completely stripped of the original vocal and dialect trappings of minstrelsy, Still, it is odd to contemplate the origin of so much family jargon.
